ARRIVING BY TRAIN
Eurostar via Lille or Paris (preferred option) to Angoulême where there are car hire agencies – Hertz and Europcar – or on to Libourne where you can change for the St Astier/Périgueux train. There is a Budget Rent-A-Car hire agency opposite Périgueux station, or you can telephone for a taxi from St Astier.
ARRIVING BY PLANE
From BORDEAUX-MERIGNAC you can rent a car or take the bus/taxi to Gare St Jean where you can find the Périgueux train (not all trains stop at St Astier).
If renting a car:
- leave the airport direction Bordeaux-Libourne which will bring you on to the ‘Rocade’.
- Follow directions for Libourne & A89, you will cross the river on the Pont d’Aquitaine – bear right, avoid directions A10!
- Once off the main road (direction Lormont/Cenon) keep right as the fork for Libourne is hidden by petrol station signs.
- Once on the N89 to Libourne, exit 8 will take you to the A89, then take exit 14 to St Astier/Neuvic, then as above.
The whole journey is just under two hours.
From BERGERAC-ROUMANIERES the journey to La Chaise takes about an hour. Apparently all the major car rental companies how have agencies there.
There are two options: (a) go through the town to connect with the road to Mussidan which will lead to the A89, take direction Périgueux and exit 14 for St Astier/Neuvic, or (b) skirt the town and pick up the N21 to Périgueux and you can either go to Périgueux then take the A89 back to exit 14 for St Astier/Neuvic or you can go across country, taking a left turn at Bordas and the valley road for Manzac, then over the hills and under the A89 to St Astier.
From LIMOGES airport the journey will likely be a little over two hours down the N21 to connect with the A89 at Périgueux, then head for Bordeaux and take exit 14 St Astier/Neuvic or go across country from Thiviers-Brantôme-Bourdeilles-Lisle-Tocane then as above.
There is also a (slow) train connection Limoges-Périgueux-Bordeaux which occasionally stops at St Astier.
Périgueux is only half an hour by road to La Chaise.
From ANGOULEME (BRIE-CHAMPNIERS / COGNAC) as this airport is north of the town, it could add as much as an hour to the journey, making it two hours in total.
I don’t know this airport, but apparently there are taxi services to town and car hire facilities. There is now a by-pass around Angoulême – follow signs for Périgueux and Ribérac, do not go to Bordeaux!
